the cancer word

Julie Romani - It's All About Cancer

So what is this ‘c’ word anyway? It is a disease of the genes, which are part of a human DNA. Many changes in the DNA are accidental. Cells constantly divide and each time that they do, they have to copy their genetic code completely. When this process takes place, which happens all day every day, sometimes mistakes happen and the replication isn’t exact which results in altered cells.

The immune system will destroy the majority of these altered cells, but sometimes some of these cells invariably escape, especially when the immune system is already impaired or weakened by some other underlying or undiagnosed imbalance or illness. Some changes wouldn’t make very much difference to how the cell works, but this one change may take that cell one step further towards producing cancerous cells.
